Rome would have to be a contender for the top three in terms of cities I ventured to. I literally could not get enough the two days I was there.
Firstly, the temperature was amazing. Sunny and so hot... bliss. We had had pretty stellar weather everywhere we went, but Rome really turned it on for us. Secondly, our accommodation was finally at the standard we deserved. A swimming pool, Jacuzzis, rooftop bar, massive rooms, flash bathrooms - the works. After some of the places we had stayed in (looking at you Boatel & Michaelangelo) this place made me feel like a celebrity. And not just any celebrity... Lizzie McGuire type celebrity.
I literally walked around Rome reliving the Lizzie McGuire Movie. I even sung 'hey now, hey nooooww this is what dreams are made of'. Yes wow I had a blast.
My first real 'Holy effing shit' moment was seeing the Trevi Fountain. I actually could not believe I was there. In the flesh. Like what!?!?!?!??! It was breathtaking. It was inspiring. It was gorgeous. It was crowded. But we all managed to squeeze in and get our picture and video of us throwing our coins in the fountain. Fun fact: The original legend says that if you throw a coin into the Trevi – with your back to the fountain, throwing the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder – that will ensure a return to Rome. Fun Fact #2: Workers routinely pull roughly €3,000 per day out of the Trevi! They use this at various charities around Rome. Aww.
The second 'holy effing shit' moment was seeing the Colosseum. It was seriously unreal. Standing outside of it, you feel so small. But inside is another story. The fact thousands of people used to pile in to watch slaves, animals and gladiators battle it out and we were standing right where we were was such a surreal feeling. The Colosseum was built in 70AD. We are in 2018 and it was built in 70. Like what????? And the fact they estimate 1,000,000 animals died there and 400,000 people - insane.
The photos don't do it justice at all.
While in Rome, we also managed to squeeze in the Vatican City. But as it is technically its own country and I took a blinking shitload of pictures, I've given it its own post. Have a look at my time in the Vatican City here.
So what else did my time in Rome include? Well, I ate a lot of gelato. Had pizza and a beer in front of the Colosseum. Walked around saying 'Wow' everytime I turned a corner because every building was just so damn beautiful. Went swimming in our hotel pool. Saw the Spanish Steps. Used 'Ciao' at every opportunity I could and got caught in a torrential downpour that literally came from nowhere.
